King Malcolm Cleanmore is
traditionally credited with a crude form of the games in 1057. The equipment
used was that available in any village, wood shafted hammers, 28 pound and 56
pound weights, hay forks, bales of straw, round river stones, and long poles
(Caber is Gaelic for tree or rafter). These heavy events tested agility,
strength and endurance. In 1746, after the battle of Culloden, the English proscribed any large gatherings by Scottish Folk. By the 1760's the Scots had begun to defy the act and it was lifted in 1781. Queen Victoria brought the games a larger following during her reign by regularly attending the Braemar Games and the royal tradition continues to this day. |
